Greetings,

This month in Let's Talk Tips:

➜ Technology

1.) The iOS 13 Privacy and Security Features You Should Know About

Your iPhone just got a major security upgrade. Here are all the ins and outs. If you own a relatively new iPhone, last week you should have received a notification that the latest iOS 13 update is ready to download. Besides the more obvious additions, like the introduction of dark mode, and the unexpected joys of Apple Arcade, it also features a raft of security and privacy enhancements.

2.) Facebook Acquires Neural Interface Startup CTRL-Labs For Its Mind-Reading Wristband

In a deal reportedly worth around $1 billion Facebook announced last week that it will acquire neural interface startup CTRL-Labs, a company that makes a wristband capable of transmitting electrical signals from the brain into computer input. The deal is the most substantial acquisition Facebook has made in the last half decade, since it paid $2 billion to acquire virtual reality company Oculus VR in 2014. It also marks a substantial increase in investment in Facebook's growing hardware ambitions, as the CTRL-Labs tech will be put to use in future augmented and virtual reality projects at the social network.

3.) From 10,000 Years to 200 Seconds. Why Google's Quantum Victory Is Both A Huge Deal — And A Letdown

Last month news leaked that researchers at Google and other institutions had solved a problem on a quantum computer 1 billion times faster than a classical computer. Google did not respond to a request for comment, but according to a draft manuscript describing the experiment, they have realized "quantum supremacy," an achievement that "heralds the advent of a much-anticipated computing paradigm." The reactions from the rest of the quantum community, however, have been downright contradictory.

4.) Boston Dynamics' Atlas Robot Can Now Do An Impressive Gymnastics Routine (Video)

The company has released a new video of Atlas, its spectacular bipedal robot that's previously been seen doing everything from parkour to backflips. In this latest video, Atlas does a small gymnastics routine, consisting of a number of somersaults, a short handstand, a 360-degree spinning jump, and even a balletic split leap. What's most impressive is seeing Atlas tie all these moves together into one pretty cohesive routine. In the video's description, Boston Dynamics says that it's using a "model predictive controller" to blend from one maneuver to the next.

5.) Apple's AR Glasses Are Hiding in Plain Sight

The company's iOS 13.1 contains new glimpses of smart glasses currently in progress. With all the phone and watch and TV and game and chip and other chip news coming out of Apple's big event last month, it was easy to forget the company's longest-running background process: an augmented-reality wearable. That's by design. Silicon Valley's advent calendar clearly marks September as the traditional time for Apple to talk finished hardware, not secretive projects. But those secretive projects have a weird habit of poking their heads into the light. A slew of features and language discovered recently inside iOS 13 and 13.1 seem to explicitly confirm the very thing Apple executives have steadfastly refused to acknowledge — an honest-to-Jobs AR headset.

3.) This One Trick Can Help Triple Your Weight Loss. And it's Not Exercise.

Weight loss is no joke. And for some, it's more difficult than you can imagine. Consuming a healthy diet along with regular exercise can be more than a task. But what if we tell you that you can maximise the results without even increasing more trips to the gym or eating more healthy? Yes, there is a way.

4.) How to Follow a Cutting Diet for Weight Loss

Cutting is an increasingly popular workout technique. It's a fat-loss phase that bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts use to get as lean as possible. Typically started a few months before a major workout regimen, it involves a weight loss diet that's meant to maintain as much muscle as possible. This article explains how to follow a cutting diet for weight loss.

5.) How to Finally Beat Post-Workout Muscle Soreness

We asked a few experts about the tricks they use to fight post-exercise muscle soreness and get back into gym - or run - or spin-ready shape as soon as possible. You've probably heard some of these tips before. Others are a little more unconventional. But on days when every movement is accompanied by a wince, they all might be worth a shot.

➜ Media

1.) Why It Matters That YouTube Changed Its Verification System

For creators, the move is just another example of a giant corporation forcing its whims and experiments on their work. Imagine a cafe. It's popular, with a large group of regulars who linger in front of the door each morning, all awaiting their next piping hot gulp. Because of the cafe's popularity, there's a neon sign in the window: "Great Coffee." The sign is a landmark for customers, who expect to see it as they're walking down the street. Then, after several years of caffeinating their customers, the cafe owner gets an email from the city. Unfortunately, the cafe doesn't meet the city's new coffee standards, so they will be sending over some contractors to take the "Great Coffee" sign down. Weird, right? That's kinda what happened to most verified YouTubers on September 19, 2019.

2.) How Apple Arcade Will Reshape Mobile Gaming

Even in a vacuum, Apple Arcade impresses. Five dollars a month will eventually net you access to more than 100 new games; several dozen will be available at launch, if the version that dropped in the iOS 13 beta is a reliable indicator. And these games are no cast-offs. But it's what Apple Arcade is missing that's downright revolutionary: ads and in-app purchases, the lifeblood of the gaming app economy. By making a hard pivot toward one subscription to play them all, Apple has a chance to nudge an entire industry toward something a little more salutary than constant cash draws.

3.) Facebook Publishes New Research into the Growth of Messaging for Commerce

Messaging use is on the rise, with the top four messaging apps now serving more active users than the big four social networks. And as such, it makes sense for brands to also be considering how they can tap into those trends, and utilize messaging within their broader digital marketing efforts. To help with this, and to provide more context on the messaging shift, Facebook recently commissioned Boston Consulting Group to conduct focus groups, in-depth interviews and an online survey of 8,864 people across nine markets in regards to their messaging use. Their findings highlight some of the key benefits, and expectations, of consumer-business messaging - here's a look at the highlights of the data.

4.) Snapchat Launches New 3D Snaps, Which Display Depth as You Move Your Phone

Snapchat has added a new creative option, with 3D effects that will simulate depth within your captured images. As explained by Snap: "Today we're excited to introduce a 3D Camera Mode that adds depth to your Snaps. Use it to create Snaps that capture spatial detail, changing in perspective and appearance based on how you move your phone when you view them. These new Snaps look different, act different, and feel different."

5.) Twitter Launches Lists as Alternate, Swipeable Timelines on iOS

After first announcing its experiment with adding lists as alternate, swipeable tweet feeds back in June, Twitter is now rolling the option out to all users on iOS. Users will now be able to pin up to five selected lists from their 'Lists' settings and have them appear as swipeable feeds from the home timeline. This will give users more ways to access specific discussions on the platform, which may make it a more engaging, interactive experience.

4.) Data Shows Baby Boomers Are Dangerously Short on Retirement Savings

When you're in your 20s or early 30s, recognizing that you don't have much in the way of retirement savings can most certainly be a wake-up call, but it's not necessarily cause for panic. After all, at those ages, you can expect to have multiple decades ahead of you in the workforce during which you can catch up and boost your savings to a healthy level. But when you're only a few years away from retirement, being short on assets is far more problematic. Unfortunately, that's the reality many of today's baby boomers are facing. In fact, the average boomer only has $136,779 in retirement savings, according to a new survey by real estate company Clever.
