Greetings,

This month in Let's Talk Tips:

➜ Technology

1.) Artificial Intelligence Might Not Hallucinate After All

Computers have gotten really good at identifying what's in photographs, and while the technology has come a long way, it's still not entirely foolproof. In particular, researchers have found that image detection algorithms remain susceptible to a class of problems called adversarial examples. As image recognition technology is used in more places, adversarial examples may present a troubling security risk.

2.) Protecting Your Computer Against Intel's Latest Security Flaw is Easy, Unless it Isn't

You're forgiven if the huge Intel chip vulnerability disclosed back on May 14th 2019 slipped under your radar. For one thing, the new problems are sort of variants of the much splashier Spectre and Meltdown bugs of early 2018. For another, Intel and the entire industry had time to work together to co-announce these new vulnerabilities alongside the patches for them.

3.) How To Use Google Maps to Save Your Parking Location

Tap into one of Maps' most useful hidden features. Don't let yourself get lost again. Your smartphone can help you find your parking spot — or any other location, for that matter. All you need is the mapping app you're probably already using for navigation.

4.) Some US Cities Are Moving Into Real Time Facial Surveillance

Agencies in Chicago and Detroit have bought real-time facial recognition systems. Chicago claims it has not used its system; Detroit says it is not using its system currently. But no federal or state law would prevent use of the technology.

5.) A Laptop Filled With Six of the World's Most Dangerous Viruses is on Sale for More Than $1 Million

Some of the world's greatest artworks are known for their elaborate backstory or complex history, but not many are actively dangerous to those who own them. 'The Persistence of Chaos' might be an exception. Created by internet artist Guo O Dong, this piece of art is an ordinary laptop filled with six of the world's most dangerous pieces of malware. It's perfectly safe — as long you don't connect to your Wi-Fi or plug in a USB.

➜ Advocacy

1.) Valuing the Voice of People Living with Disabilities in Manitoba

Recently the Manitoba Government made a decision to reject a core funding application from the Manitoba League of Persons with Disabilities (MLPD) for the 2018-19 fiscal year. It can be very difficult for an organization to function without core funding which diminishes its capacity. The organization (formally known as the Manitoba League of the Physically Handicapped) has existed since 1974 as a consumer-based organization of people living with disabilities.
