2.) On TikTok, There Is No Time

The popular app doesn't tell users when a video was posted. Creators say that makes it easier to steal content—but there are also upsides to forgetting what day it is. TikTok, the wildly popular social media app that revolves round 15-second video clips, has become a major cultural force. It has birthed chart-topping hits like "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X, incubated new subcultures like VSCO girls, and become the default way to goof off at work. But there's a simple facet of the app—which has been downloaded over 1.4 billion times globally—that has received far less attention: It exists outside of time.

3.) Navigating The New Realities Of Work And Retirement

Every day around 10,000 baby boomers hit retirement age, but not all of them are retiring. People age 65 and up are the fastest growing group of workers in the country. About a quarter of them are still in the workforce. But not all of them are working just because they want to, and many retirees were forced to leave work before they were ready. NPR's Ina Jaffe covers aging, and all this week she's bringing us a series of stories about how older Americans are navigating the new realities of work and retirement.

5.) Top Cybersecurity Threats For Small Businesses And Tips To Stay Protected

As cyberattacks become more sophisticated than ever, small business owners need to take action or face some potentially devastating consequences. Contrary to popular belief, an estimated 43% of all data breaches involve small businesses, not large corporations. Even more alarming, another study found that 60% of small businesses who fell victim to cyberattacks closed their doors within six months. From these two statistics alone, it's clear the stakes couldn't be higher.

➜ Advocacy

1.) Access To Justice: Legal Aid Critically Important Part Of Justice System By Beverley Mclachlin

This spring, the Ontario government announced drastic cuts to legal aid in Ontario. The Legal Aid Ontario budget was cut by almost 30 per cent and funding was eliminated for refugee and immigration cases. This meant deep cuts to clinics and services, striking hard at the province's most vulnerable inhabitants. These cuts were felt especially strongly in the larger centres, including Toronto.

2.) Blind Man With Guide Dog Denied Service, Arrested At Kamloops Gas Station

A man who's blind was told his guide dog wasn't allowed inside a Kamloops gas station, and when RCMP arrived, he thought they would defend his rights, but instead, the officers put him in handcuffs.

3.) The Internet Thinks You're A Robot, And Other 'Dark Patterns' People With Disabilities Face Online

CAPTCHA security tests, or the "Completely Automated Public Turing Test, to Tell Computers and Humans Apart", are not always accessible to people with disabilities — sometimes putting them, ridiculously, in the "robot" category. These moments of friction or "encoded inhospitality", as accessibility advocate Chancey Fleet has put it, block non-visual access to everyday digital interactions. She also calls them "dark patterns" — a term popularised by British user-experience consultant Harry Brignull, which describes online techniques that manipulate users. A completely fake online countdown, for example.

4.) Made-In-Manitoba Technology Aims To Help Visually Impaired Navigate Indoors

A pair of graduates from Brandon's Assiniboine Community College have developed a system to help the visually impaired navigate inside large buildings, including schools.

5.) Advocates Slam Ontario Plan To Rate Accessibility Of Buildings

A group that advocates for better accessibility standards in Ontario is voicing concerns about the province's new assessment plan. The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) Alliance says the plan to conduct accessibility assessments of public and private buildings will remove few barriers and is bound to be marred by conflicts of interest.
